American Muslims Use PSA to Counter Rising Fears of Islam, Muslims

My Faith My Voice" gives Muslims platform to speak to America directly

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A grassroots coalition of American Muslims today released a public service announcement (PSA) and online campaign titled "My Faith My Voice" at a press conference in Washington, D.C., as a response to the rising tide of fear-mongering invoked by the plans to build a Muslim-led community center New York City.

The 60-second PSA showcases American Muslims of diverse ages and backgrounds speaking to the specific fears and concerns many Americans may have about Islam and Muslims.

The script reads, in part:

"In recent weeks, a lot of people have been telling you what to think about Muslims. They say you should fear me…But the truth is I don't want to impose my faith on you...Islam teaches me to respect all people...I am an American. I am Muslim. This is My Faith. This is My Voice."

"We often hear from fear-mongers that Muslims are trying to take over America or that they are trying to impose their faith on others, but this is simply not true," said David Hawa, producer of the PSA, at the  press conference. "This PSA is our humble and sincere effort to ease people's concerns that this is not who we are or what we are about."

American Muslims from around the country are also submitting their own versions of the PSA as a way to support the campaign. Communities are also asked to contact their local PSA directors to request the airing of the PSA in their respective markets.

A collection of American Muslims announced a new grassroots online project Monday aimed at countering any anti-Islamic sentiment that has developed around the controversial proposal to build a mosque near the site of the World Trade Center.

A video designer and his friends in northern Virginia on Monday launched an affecting public service announcement featuring a montage of American Muslims, including children and senior citizens, a doctor and a cop, a Phillies fan and faces of different races, all aimed at countering the wave of suspicion and Islam-bashing stemming from the mosque proposed near Ground Zero.

The new effort, called "My Faith My Voice," resulted from a brainstorming session by a group of young Muslim professionals in the DC area who were upset at the rising tide of Islamophobia in the country. The video was produced by David Hawa, a 37-year-old Muslim who was born in Washington and raised in Virginia "as just another kid who happened to speak two languages."
